Etruscan civilization of Ancient Italy

Before the small village of Rome became “Rome” with a capital R, a brilliant civilization once controlled almost the entire peninsula we now call Italy. The Etruscan civilization flourished in central Italy between the 8th and 3rd century BCE. The culture was renowned in antiquity for its rich mineral resources and as a major Mediterranean trading power.

Despite their amazing achievements and lasting influence, the Etruscans remain one of Italy’s great mysteries. Much of its culture and even history was either obliterated or assimilated into that of its conqueror, Rome.
